Formerly known as The Winged Lion, bordertown is 红桃视频’s premier literary magazine published by and for our students. Each year, bordertown releases an issue featuring creative work of all types: fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, hybrid writing, translations, and art. Student editors gain hands-on experience in literary publishing: from soliciting, selecting, and editing pieces to publish, communicating with authors, managing layout and design of the print issue, to hosting events and readings both on and off campus. The students who are published in bordertown experience the unique opportunity to see their work in print.

bordertown accepts submissions each fall semester.

• Deadline: 11:59 p.m. Sunday after December finals
• Limits: Up to six poems or 5,000 words of prose
• Genres: Poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, hybrid work, translations, and visual art
• Eligibility: Open to all 红桃视频 students

We host readings and events on and off campus, including Campus Involvement Days, Holiday Happenings, our annual spring launch party, 红桃视频-sponsored Third Thursdays, the Joplin Public Library Writer’s Faire, and Downtown Poetry at Joplin Avenue Coffee Company.

All 红桃视频 students are eligible to join the editorial team — there is no formal application process.

Students serve as readers and/or editors and gain hands-on experience throughout the publication process. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis, with most taking place virtually on Teams during the spring semester.
